Without the bottom of the lows, it’s tough to really appreciate the nice things in life. One issue I had to find out the hard way was only you’ll be able to make yourself happy.

I understand some believe others or things are the supply of their happiness, however, what happens once those things are stripped from you unexpectedly?

Personally, I believe you — and solely you — can make yourself happy. Once you notice everything that was your happiness is no longer, what are you to do?

1. Prefer to be around the right individuals.

What good are friends if they’re continuously putting you down? Will they even be considered friends if they aren’t there for you once you really need them?

This is the time in your life after you really find out who your true friends are. If you’re one of the few who really keep friends with more than half of the people you knew from high school, I actually have to give you props. Most of the people I do know have lost touch just because they’ve gone their separate ways.

If you have got a life-long friend, the only recommendation I can provide you with is to hold on to him or her, and never ever let that person go.

2. Concentrate on what you’ve got, not what you don’t.

This one is pretty obvious. Why stay down in the dumps because you can’t have the newest and greatest iPhone?

Cherish what you’ve got. Some folks don’t have this luxury.

3. Smile more often.

Smile more often even if you don’t feel like it. Smiling will cause you to be happier in the long haul.

Don’t believe me? Go here.

4. Choose honesty.

Ever end up telling somebody a lie? If it’s a little white lie, then what’s the big deal, right?

I’ll tell you. the issue with lying is you ultimately have to be compelled to cover up your lies with even more lies. You recognize where I’m going with this one.

In time, you finish up with this immense, untidy web of lies. Do you really want that sitting on your chest day after day? I can barely keep in mind the stories I’ve told that are actually true, not to mention the lies I’ve told.

So, do yourself a favor, and simply don’t lie.

5. Let go of negative things and/or individuals.

This is yet one more lesson I’ve had to find out the exhausting way. I’m positive people have found themselves staying friends with people that don’t make them feel the best regarding themselves.

No one — I repeat, nobody — should have to be compelled to deal with this. If your friends aren’t all about attempting to assist you and make you feel higher about yourself, then why are you keeping them around? There’s no need, therefore just allow them to go.

6. Live your life for you, not anyone else.

I believe this is often the most vital of them all. You have got to understand this is no one’s life but your own. Why would you be living the way others wish you to live?

They aren’t the ones who have to be compelled to deal with your struggles day in and day out. You choose how you wish to live, and you choose the struggles you’re going to face.

Don’t let anyone dictate your life, particularly people that don’t matter.

7. Finally, simply be happy.

I know you’re thinking, “How?” Simply have a go at it. Think happy thoughts. Stop focusing on the negative. Stop focusing on the future.

Live in the now. Trust me; you’ll be happier for it.
